WASHINGTON, March 14 /PRNewswire/ -- XBRL US, the nonprofit consortium for XML business reporting standards in the US marketplace, announced today that Campbell Pryde will join the organization as Vice President, Domain and Chief Standards Officer. In his new role, Mr. Pryde will lead the development and maintenance of taxonomies for XML-based business reporting applications in the US. This position will play an integral part of the executive team of XBRL US in determining the strategy for taxonomy development and maintenance.

"The Chief Standards Officer is a pivotal position in driving adoption," said Jeff Diermeier, President and CEO, CFA Institute, "Campbell Pryde's background in both accounting and investments makes him uniquely qualified to step into this role."Mr. Pryde joins XBRL US from Morgan Stanley, where as Executive Director in the Institutional Securities Group, he managed the equity research XBRL- based valuation framework. He has been involved with XBRL since 2001, and most recently served as Chairman of the XBRL US Domain Steering Committee, which is responsible for setting the strategic direction for development of the XBRL US GAAP taxonomies. Prior to joining Morgan Stanley, Mr. Pryde was a Partner in the Risk and Advisory Practice of KPMG LLP. He is a member of the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants.

Fujitsu has launched its XWand Tool software offering, which generates the XBRL-formatted financial reporting data that will be required for the Japan Financial Services Agency's EDINET system from the beginning of the 2008 fiscal year.

According to Fujitsu, the automated software tool will help companies to comply with the new mandatory reporting system, as no advanced knowledge of XBRL will be necessary to produce XBRL-formatted financial reports and submit the reports on the Japan Financial Services Agency's (FSA) EDINET system.

XBRL has emerged as an international standard computer language for generating, distributing, and utilizing financial information. Fujitsu has been involved in the XBRL Consortium, which sets the standards for the format, since the body's inception. In 2003, Fujitsu introduced Interstage Xwand; a middleware offering that handles XBRL data and is now being sold in over 20 countries.

The use of XBRL promises to lower the cost of handling financial information for companies, auditors, regulatory authorities, analysts, investors, and information services, while ensuring that accurate information is available quickly and in a usable form.

Users can readily create all types of financial reporting data in an EDINET-compliant XBRL format, such as balance sheets and income statements. In addition, the software can generate HTML previews of the financial reports. Fujitsu said that the product features user-friendly data entry screens and wizards and visual verification prior to submission.

Fujitsu hopes that the FSA's new legislation will drive sales of its new software offering, and has set a sales target of JPY30bn ($ 290m) from all XBRL-related business over a three-year period.

US drive on online reporting language will push UK to tipping point

LONDON -- The SEC's drive to make XBRL mandatory will drive forward change in Britain, predicts a UK-based specialist.

The UK's Investor Relations Society (IRS) hosted the discussion yesterday as part of its program of webinars entitled: 'XBRL: are more headaches heading your way? '
 
The UK has been slow in moving toward XBRL - regulator the Financial Services Authority and the London Stock Exchange have both adopted a wait-and-see approach - but interest is growing.

Some 66 percent of participants logging on for the IRS webinar admitted to having no experience of XBRL but over 50 percent expected to be using it within the next 12 months.

Dr Joanne Locke, research fellow from Birmingham Business School at the University of Birmingham, predicted that the new mindset in the UK could be fuelled by developments in the US. 'It may be that the US push toward XBRL will, in the end, motivate national bodies to adopt XBRL tags,' she said.

She added that providing information with this extra functionality could be a good way to attract more investment from the US. 'Early adopters could earn kudos from the market as well as benefit from more input on the taxonomies (the XBRL classification schemes),' she noted.

The session included an update on global XBRL adoption from Mike Willis, a partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers. He outlined developments including Tokyo's plans to mandate XBRL from April this year.

Questions then inevitably turned to cost. 'There are several plug-ins available, some of which are open-source, but the cost really comes in mapping the underlying taxonomies,' Willis explained.

Whatever happens, the nature of European information dissemination means a Europe-wide regulatory impetus is unlikely. 'The bottom line is that European regulators are looking at an integrated network of national databases,' said Locke.
